Regarded as the “Nature Island of the Caribbean,” the Commonwealth of Dominica is abundant in natural beauty with its thick tropical mountainous landscape. Settled by the Caribs in the 14th century the island was named Waitikubuli, translating to “tall is her body.” The island's name was changed to Dominica in 1493 after the day of the week that legendary explorer Christopher Columbus first saw the land, which happened to be on a Sunday. Dominica's tropical rain forest can be explored through a series of hikes that range from beginner to advanced. Hikers can visit Boiling Lake, which is the world's second largest actively burning lake. Boiling Lake is located inside Dominica's Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park features many natural attractions such as the towering Middleham Falls and the serene Emerald Pool. The island's deep sparkling blue waters are home to a variety of aquatic life, including Sperm and Humpback whales. Year-round visitors can watch whales and dolphins play in their natural environment. Although the island can be a wilderness escape, Dominica's capital Roseau offers the perks of an urban centre with a diverse restaurant and shopping scene.
