The colourful capital of Dominica,
Roseau has many attractions worth exploring. Visitors can learn about the history
of Roseau and Dominica through a visit to the Dominica
Museum, which has artifacts and informative displays about the island. The
cobblestone Old
Market where vendors sell T-shirts, hats, crafts and various other Dominican
goods was once the site of a slave market. If looking for a bite to eat, the Public
Market has fresh foods galore with juicy tropical fruits, crisp vegetables,
succulent fish and more island produce. A popular spot to walk off a large meal
from one of Roseau's restaurants or just relax is the Botanical
Gardens. The 40 acre (16 ha) garden consists of shrubs, trees and radiant
tropical flowers. The colourfulness that Roseau exudes can perhaps best be seen
during The
Real Mas', which is an annual pre-Lenten festival held around February or
March. Visitors to Roseau during this time of the year can watch impressive costume
bands, a carnival queen show and other events.
